Hinges, channels, locks and designer handles

Hardware is the part of furniture you touch every day, so buy the moving parts branded and save elsewhere if you must. Soft-close hinges and drawer channels close silently and protect shutters from slamming — the price difference is small and one-time; the difference in daily use is permanent. Check load ratings in plain terms: a standard telescopic channel comfortably carries clothes and utensils, but deep pan drawers and pull-outs need heavy-duty channels rated for 30kg and more.

For handles and knobs, the finish decides how they look after a year — PVD and anodized finishes keep their colour. Locks are no place for economy.
